Happy new you!

Toned doesn’t have to mean tasteless thanks to the award-winning LoveFit Café

Keeping your new year’s resolutions just got a lot tastier! The award winning LoveFit Café of Brighton Square in The Lanes makes all its food and drinks, such as its chicken and red pesto panini and falafel and houmous pittas, with unique recipes that cut out the rubbish like saturated fat and unnecessary salt and sugar, whilst packing in the good stuff like protein, vitamins and minerals – perfect if you want to stay slim or intend on maintaining a healthy balance for 2010.

They’re Brighton’s premier Juice and Smoothie bar, specialities including the popular Immune Boost to help ward off seasonal sniffles. There’s also a range of scrumptious whey protein smoothies exclusively designed for LoveFit by former Mr Universe, Jason Corrick – ideal for both those starting out at the gym or wanting faster gains to seasoned professionals alike.

Love it at Love Fit

Andrew Kay finds tasty food that’s healthy too at Love Fit Café

OK, I know, no-one is going to believe me when I say I went out looking for healthy food. And if I am honest I was apprehensive, as over the years I have been served some pretty dismal stuff under the banner of ‘healthy’.

Love Fit Café is right at the heart of the Lanes and the heart theme carries through with their logo and also their concern for healthy food. People use the phrase ‘eat your heart out’ and some of us are doing that – quite literally – with an unbalanced diet and too many saturated fats. Cutting down is one option, but all too often that can mean cutting down on flavour.

That was not going to work for business partners Steve and Jason of Love Fit Café. Keen fitness fans and body builders, they both knew that they wanted healthy food that was also tasty and satisfying. Cutting down on the wrong kind of fats, refined sugars and salt was obvious, but their challenge was to make it tasty.

Their menu does exactly that, and most of it is prepared fresh in their own kitchens daily. I ate a very good chicken caesar salad that was tasty and filling. I then, of course, ruined it by eating a slice of one of the best cakes I have tasted in some time – or had I? Apparently not. Made in their own kitchen, it was about as healthy as a cake can get; I didn’t care – it tasted great.

Around me people were tucking into great looking freshly prepared paninis, a heart chilli and baked potatoes. I couldn’t resist a berry smoothie which was scarily purple but also very light. And now that the sun has come out they are making fresh frozen yoghurt each day with a variety of toppings.

For serious body builders they also offer power smoothies using healthy supplements. For me I would be happy with a salad and a berry smoothie here any day, and a damn good coffee too. Their passion for fitness and food shows at every level and there is no worthy ‘health’ food preaching either. It’s simply a bright modern café in the centre of town, open seven days a week with sunny outdoor and indoor seating and an affordable menu of dishes to eat in or take away that will neither break your bank or break your heart.

Now, where did I hide that slice of banana cake?

There’s no place like home

So are there any new places to eat and drink? Yes there are, even though most bars and restaurants come and go at a frantic pace, changing names and menus almost on a weekly basis.

We did find something quite interesting in a relatively new café right in the heart of the Lanes. Two very likely lads, Steve and Jason, happened up in Brighton four years ago from Liverpool and Nottingham respectively, at the time they were partners in every sense but now they’re just business buddies.

They opened LoveFit, an ingenious new style of eatery in Brighton Square. These boys, who frequent one of the most famous gyms in Hove, are really into the healthy eating scene. Their ethic is ‘healthy food with all the crap taken out’.

They serve full breakfasts, for £5.95, until 11am plus there are pancakes, waffles and very fresh bread. Lunch features a large range of salads and sandwiches, paninis etc. Drinks are ‘guilt-free’ coffee (very ethical and Fair Trade etc), the usual range of soft drinks and some quite remarkable smoothies. The cakes, all made on the premises range from carrot, banana to chocolate brownies, all with little sugar or bad fats, brilliant.

Their ‘house’ Lovefit club sarnie was one of the best my partner had ever eaten and he’s quite an expert; my chicken and red pesto panini was delicious. The salads being devoured by the large number of lunchers also looked great.

Open seven days a week until 5pm this is a place to watch, their über friendly approach (never mind the bulging muscles and shorts) makes Lovefit a great place. Brighton Square, one of the blots on Brighton’s architectural landscape, is improved no end by the arrival of Steve and Jason. This is the fashionable way to eat and enjoy

"A real gem - for value, quality and atmosphere - highly recommended"

This cafe provided a welcome break whilst shopping in Brighton on a rainy day. We looked at the usual cafe chains but decided to take a chance at LoveFit and we certainly weren't disappointed. Service was excellent and my husband's meal was tailored to meet his preference and my chicken tikka pitta with yogurt, mint dressing and salad was of excellent quality, portion size and value. Staff were very friendly and the whole place, albeit quite small, buzzed. Only one suggestion for improvement - how about the daily papers in your magazine rack!! It was good to find a cafe where nutrition really counts and we will certainly revisit when next in Brighton. If you value healthy eating at a good price in a friendly atmostphere -do try LoveFit and you should not be disappointed.

“A healthy coffee bar, with no compromise on the taste”

Forget the big coffee bar chains. There are so many good independent coffee bars in Brighton, seek out the best of them, and Lovefit is one of the best, in the centre of The Lanes. They believe in only serving healthy drinks and snack, but its not a do-gooders hippy tree huggers place. It looks and feels and has the choice of any coffee bar, they've just sourced health options. So the cakes are low sugar, high fibre. Snacks for kids include yogurts and fruit. About the only thing they don't stock is 'full fat' sugared fizzy drinks, but all the diet versions are there: Coke, Dr Pepper, Sprite etc, so you don't miss them. They have high energy whey products for body builders too. Oh and a good clean toilet too, something that smaller establishments overlook, but essential when you've got a young child.

“Thank goodness for Lovefit”

The Brighton Lanes are both a wonderful and a terrible place to work. Wonderful because they are full of gorgeous shops and lovely restaurants and terrible because I spend too much money and put on too much weight. Until Lovefit arrived!! Now I can satisfy my mid afternoon cake cravings with a low fat, low sugar delicious slice of lemon drizzle or banana cake and feel very self righteous. The main meals are healthy and delicious too and the staff are really friendly and welcoming.

“The Way Forward for all cafes”

Just got back from a lovely Easter weekend in Brighton. Visited friends and we enjoyed the nightlife of Brighton. The next day we were hungry but wanted something healthy and stumbled upon Lovefit. What a find the whole menu is geared towards healthy eating and nutrition so if you just want to be healthy or are a gym fan this seems to be the place for you. What was nice to see was that it drew in a cross section of the public and does appeal to everyone. We had one of the breakfasts and smoothies. Due to a heavy night I had the immune boosting smoothie, which has a slightly acquired taste but certainly perked me up for the day. The staff was great and more than happy to explain the menu to you if you had any questions. The cafe had a real lively buzz to it and as the sun was up we sat outside on their terrace, but enjoyed the music inside.

This will be our new place to hangout and I would recommend this to people to go to. This certainly should be the way cafes should be gearing themselves in the future in this age of obesity and poor nutrition that we live in.

I often pop in for a take out smoothie. the qualities of each smoothie blend are listed, for example the Apple, Celery & Lime is cleansing etc etc. Its location means if convenient for shoppers and working lunchers, as well as being close to several central gyms. As well as the smoothies they also offer a menu of self confessed 'guilt free food' including sandwiches and salads that have been especially created as super healthy.

Lovefit cafe - I have been here many times and have had great paninis, sandwiches and smoothies and the best thing is you can tuck in knowing its all healthy. Its a bit tucked out the way but well worth a visit to Brighton Square in the Lanes to find it. Please set up another cafe in Hove. :)

Samantha, Brighton

We popped into this cafe today as we got a bit lost in the laines, and i'm glad we did. We were served by a very lovely waitress and sat in the sunny square outside. I had one of the best coffees I've tasted in years, with some delicious 'guilt free' carrot cake. I live in Eastbourne, but I will be sure to pop back here when I am next in Brighton.
